Acting in Plays, Singing/Audition song for "Singin' in the Rain" (Cosmo or Donald)
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 11/3/2010
QuestionHi,
My school will be doing "Singin' in the Rain" soon for our
musical, and I was looking for a legit song that could work
for Cosmo or Donald. I have a range to match any song I've
come across (from Ol' Man River to King of the World, and
then some, Low E to High Bb to be exact). I'm really looking
for a song to match the energy Cosmo needs and the vocal
skill required of Donald. All I could come up with was "That
Face" from The Producers, but I don't feel like that would
be best for the Cosmo part of it, but ok for Donald.
AnswerHi, Brandon –
Thank you for the question.
Cosmo and Donald Lockwood in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN couldn't be more unlike each other. In professional theatre, the performer who's going to ace the audition is the one who knows which character suits him best.
Watch the movie.
Which one looks and feels more like you? Gene Kelley or Donald O'Connor?
For Donald, consider:
I Found A Million Dollar Baby (In A Five and Ten Cent Store) – FUNNY LADY
It's Only A Paper Moon – STORMY WEATHER
A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody
For Cosmo, consider:
I Can't Be Bothered Now – CRAZY FOR YOU
Once In Love With Amy – WHERE'S CHARLEY
We're In The Money – 42nd STREET
Whatever you choose to sing, project the manner of the character you want.
