Acting in Plays, Singing/How old is too old?
Expert: Wanda Reinholdt - 11/29/2010
QuestionI'm 18, and I've always had an interest in musical theatre. I've been in school productions before, and a friend of mine who had nine years of vocal training helped me a bit with my singing. However, my parents wouldn't let me take vocal or dance lessons when I asked them (I was 12 at the time) because they said that no professionals start after age 7 or 8, and there's no point in taking lessons if I didn't want to be a professional.
Now that I'm on my own, I'm wondering if I could still take vocal lessons or dance lessons and do well, or if I'm just too old to catch on or be very good at them.
AnswerHey there, Kay...And thanks for writing. :)
This is a question I get from time to time. I find it really sad that parents use this idea to not put their children into something. Please know, although it is little solace, that your parents are not the first to do this.
I'm not sure why your parents told you this. There could be many reasons including financial, misguided information about the arts, fear, and the like. Know though that many professionals start very young. But others have started when they are older too.
When children are drawn to something, it probably means that that is definitely either a great interest or a talent that is just waiting to fly. I believe it is essential that parents realize this and do whatever it takes to give their child an experience with the things that interest them. Even a lesson here or there would be better than nothing.
Back to you...
It's a really good sign that you are still interested in doing this AND that you have not given up. You have been in productions and that is an incredible testimony to your desire and to your interests. That means that it was not a fleeting moment when you thought it would be fun. It means that there is something more in it for you.
You are never too old to take lessons and to become very good. The only difference is that when you are young, you are much quicker to catch on. However, you are only 18 and so there is a very young still. You have a LOT of life left in you.
So choose your lessons and go for it! As you learn, audition for musicals or dance shows. Perform and enjoy. Not only will you be more alive because of it but you will inspire others too as you step out.
Does that help you?
