Acting in Plays, Singing/Too late?
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 12/28/2010
QuestionI'm 22 and about to graduate from college with a journalism degree. (It gets relevant, read on.) This was the major I chose, as a plan B, because I thought there'd be more job opportunities than in music. You write for the Sentinel, so you probably know exactly how stupid this reasoning was. I never thought the job market would get this bad.
Is it too late to start singing again? Professionally? I took voice lessons all through high school and was encouraged at college to be a music major, but I haven't trained in three years. There just wasn't time. Now I can already start to hear my voice begin to deteriorate, and the lifetime of regrets is already starting.
But I'm 22. No music degree, no recent experience. People younger than me have actual resumes. And I can't exactly do undergrad again. I was pretty good. So are thousands of others.
I guess what I'm really asking is, is it time to just give up on singing? (If it is, say so. I'm not interested in false hope.)
AnswerHello, Katherine –
Thank you for the e-mail. Happy New Year.
You know, of course, that not every singer under 23 – including the thousands who graduate every year from world class conservatories and universities – is paying their rent as a singer. The vast majority never will.
Your voice is deteriorating because you don't know how to exercise it. My job as a professional vocal coach is to identify your vocal category, i.e., soprano, mezzo-soprano, etc., and to train you accordingly. That means developing and expanding your vocal range and working on your chosen material.
It is never too late to develop your vocal skills. It is never too late to become a better musician. What I know as a professional singer is that the need to sing – i.e., in front of a live audience – overpowered everything else in my life. And it was fueled by the need to perform certain repertoire. I made my debut and got my first check when I was 19. That developed into a life style revolving around constant practice and staying in prime physical condition so that I could perform that repertoire – and be paid for it.
What do you want to sing?
Name a dozen pieces – which is about the length of a standard CD or the "set" of songs you would perform in concert or at a local cabaret. That will take a while. I'm sure you will have other questions by the time you come up with the list.
I am a vocal coach to working singers in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm also the Editor and Publisher of SanFranciscoSentinel.com All my articles and interviews provide a link to my personal e-mail.
