Acting in Plays, Singing/song/monologue selection

Question
Son is Freshman in high school and trying out for a role in the Spring musical.  It's Les Mis.  Songs and monologues were given out to audition with.  They need to audition with both a song and a monologue.  His voice is tenor - song selection is Bring Him Home - Jean Valjean.  Does he need to choose the monologue that goes with the same character as his voice range?  Highly unlikely as a freshman he's going to get the lead.  Can he do a monologue from one of the other characters?  This theater stuff is all new to us - any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!!

Answer
Every director does things differently, but, yes, he can choose a monologue from another character.  Typically there are fewer songs to audition with, as they just assign one song for each vocal type.  I think he can safely look for a different monologue.
