Expert: Sean Martinfield - 2/5/2010
QuestionHey,
I really would like to what it takes to get into acting, I have been acting since I was six for 7 years now for Youth Education on Stage, I have a dream of acting for Disney or a movie, I have been told a few times that i sorta look like Sandra Bullock when i smile,I have been practising and writing my own plays and stuff I need a good college that is best for me, I am only in 8th grade, I will be 14 in Aug 12, I would like if you would write back thank you !
Confused, and Worried Abigail.
AnswerHello, Abigail –
Thank you for the question.
You are too young to be confused and worried.
The answer is simple. At 14, your job is to stay in school and earn a 4.5 grade average so you can earn scholarship money to the University with the best Theatre Arts Department.
While you are doing that, you must get into the habit of reading no less than two plays a week – from every source and time frame. You need to build an audition portfolio of monologues that work for you in a variety of performing arenas, i.e., school and community theatre productions, etc.
The actors I work with also sing and dance. They strive to keep themselves in top physical condition. You must do the same. You also need to keep up with what’s going on in the world. The plays or movies you might be auditioning for will be about subjects and situations that are going on right now.
Study Political Science. Study the Business of Theatre and Movie Making. Know more about what’s going on than any Agent who might one day persuade you to sign on the dotted line.
