Good morning i live in south Fl and i want to make the correct decision for my two girls one sings and writes music the other is in acting i am trying to direct them the best way i just don't know who to speak with in my area someone like Sean Martinfield who could help me direct my girls towards the right path do you know of some one in south Fl that can?

Hello, William –

Thank you for the question. I am not familiar with private coaches in south Florida.

The very best advice I can offer for both of your kids is to get them to realize that there no guarantees in the performing arts and that their most important job right now is to strive for a 4.5 grade average so they can qualify for scholarship monies to the best conservatories and universities possible. Along the way, each needs to become the best musician on the block. That starts with the fundamentals of Music Theory. The singer must perform with professional musicians, the composer must write for well-educated and experienced musicians. One day, each of your daughters must present their work to a Producer whose primary interest is making a profit.

Direct their priorities to learning everything they can about the field of their choice, i.e., studying the careers and repertoire of singers and composers who have succeeded in all kinds of musical genres, including opera, jazz, Broadway, standard Pop, the American Songbook, etc. Discussion starts with references. That's what libraries are for. The more YOU know about these separate fields, the better you will be able to participate in decisions along the way.

From what I understand, there are many cultural opportunities available in south Florida. Take advantage of every free performance you can. From now on, anything you and they watch on TV together on "Family Night" – discuss the performances and the qualities of the script and the music. Critical thinking skills are not based on personal preferences. There's a reason why some products and performers are more successful or more appealing than others. Get them to observe and talk like common sense Business People – because, ultimately, that's what it's all about.

I am a professional vocal coach in San Francisco. I have 24 years of experience as Personal Trainer to singers and actors in the San Francisco Bay Area. I sang professionally for 20 years and know what it means to live the life of a musician. I can determine your voice category, i.e., Tenor, Baritone, Bass, Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, Alto Belter, etc., and how to broaden and strengthen your range. Experience

As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre. There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
