Acting in Plays, Singing/Wizard of Oz
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 5/1/2010
QuestionHi, I am auditioning for Wizard of Oz in a few weeks. I want to be the Wicked Witch of the West, but even though she is a non-singing part, I still need a song. I have a large range, mezzo to low alto. Singing is not my strong point and I need a simple song.
AnswerHello, Sarah –
Thank you for the question.
Everybody wants to play the Wicked Witch. Everyone knows she doesn't sing. What they may be looking for is the spirit of M.G.M. and Margaret Hamilton. Your job is to perform fabulously so that you will be well-remembered come their next musical audition.
Consider any of the following:
I Hate Men – KISS ME, KATE
Ev'rything I've Got – BY JUPITER
Cuddle Up a Little Closer – FOUR JILLS IN A JEEP
We're In The Money – 42nd STREET
Keep all the characteristics of the witch in mind. Go for the comedy. What if the song were actually in a scene from the show? How would that influence your presentation? Whatever you choose, find the obvious phrases where you can do a suggestion of Margaret Hamilton. Watch her in "My Little Chickadee" starring Mae West and W.C. Fields.
