Ok, so 2 years ago I discovered a passion for musical theatre, something that I have never felt with anything else i've ever done before. I started taking voice lessons, and according to him I should "pursue a career in theatre because i have a lot of potential, and was just a late bloomer". I had been thinking about it, but didn't think it was possible. Now he made me seriously consider it. That said, my question is: is it possible for me (I'm going to be 17 this month)to go into theatre? Maybe not Broadway, although it would be awesome, but become some sort of performer? I am totally willing to put everything I have into this, in fact i'm getting a job this summer to pay for dance lessons, but I have no experience. I participate in my school plays, and summer theatre, and at playhouses in my area. I used to be really shy, but I love this and i've really become more outgoing to fit that. My parents are really discouraging about it because they don't want me going to college and then failing at this, which they constantly remind me of, but it's really my choice and i'm hoping for a scholarship. With all that said, do you think I have chance? You've probably had lots of experience with hopefuls, what's your advice? Should I give up and let it be a hobby, or can I pursue this career? Being able to pay your bills as a performer comes with time. It involves all the training and education you describe, but it is also directly associated with Opportunity. That means, being in the right place at the right time – and squashing your competition. That is an on-going reality no matter how old you are or which award is sitting on your shelf.
Not everyone graduating with a degree in Theatre or Music will sustain or ever get close to a career.
The latest statistics prove that individuals with performing arts degrees are at the very bottom of the earned-income pay scale. Obviously, there are exceptions. But, again, HOW that happens is through a wild combination of talent, connections, image, and opportunity. In other words, it's a total crap shoot.
Many individuals learn about themselves through the Arts. That's what it's all about. And that can lead to all kinds of healthy lifestyle choices and a myriad of other positive experiences.
Determination is one thing. Box Office appeal is another. It all starts with your first audition. You can be the most educated and trained performer you know and still not make it past the audition panel, conductor, and choreographer. Then it's about the next audition. And the next after that – even if you are cast in the show and the critics adore you. Eventually, the vast majority find that kind of pressure (and expense) to be self-defeating.
One way to get around the parental argument about your Academic career is to pay for it yourself.

I have 24 years of experience as Personal Trainer to singers and actors in the San Francisco Bay Area. I sang professionally for 20 years and know what it means to live the life of a musician. Experience
As a vocal coach, I work primarily with singers and actors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. My students range from absolute beginners to working professionals, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. The vast majority of my clients come to me through recommendation. I know how to identify any singer's vocal category, i.e., soprano, tenor, alto, baritone, etc. I know how to muscle-up every singer's vocal range and to expand it beyond conventional definitions. I have developed a vocal methodology for those who want to know how to belt, THE BELTER'S METHOD. As a singer who spent half of his career doing Bel Canto, I know that classical or Italian methodologies do not work in Standard American music. Bel Canto cannot be "adapted" to meet the needs of contemporary American music, including the demands of the Musical Theatre.
There are a number of major components to my work as a vocal coach. The first is to identify the client's vocal category and to strengthen and maximize the vocal range accordingly. Then it's about teaching a reliable vocal workout that will enable the client to gain better control of their musicianship. That includes scale work to expand the vocal range and to improve placement, breath control, and diction. Then we work on material for the audition portfolio, the immediate job or assignment, a recording session, etc. My task to is to better equip singers and actors who are hoping to or relying upon their performance skills and vocal endurance to maintain a career in the Performing Arts.
