Acting in Plays, Singing/Dinner Show Solo
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 10/11/2011
QuestionSo every year, my Chorale hosts a dinner show called Cabaret in honor of the musical in which we open the show with the title song, Cabaret. My chorale director offers us the opportunity to sing a solo of out choice at the show. I'm a soprano 1 and I want a show stopping, jaw dropping, yet not overdone Broadway that will blow people out of the water. Thanks!
Sincerely, Cheyanne
Answer
Hi, Cheyanne –
Thank you for the question.
As singers, you and I both know that "show-stopping" numbers start with a show-stopping voice.
The vast majority of people are not all that crazy about Broadway tunes, especially when they're taken out of context and if the show isn't a familiar one, or the song seems overdone even to you, etc. Avoid anything from Phantom of the Opera, Les Miz, Wicked, Grease, and West Side Story.
My job as a vocal coach is to get your vocal chops in shape for special events like these. What was the last major event you sang at? What's coming up after this one? If you are sure about your stuff as a Soprano 1, then now is the time to present it. Work with your accompanist before the show. Consider adding any of these show-stopping numbers to your Soprano 1 Broadway Portfolio.
