Acting in Plays, Singing/Female duets and being a "true" saprano
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 10/29/2011
QuestionHi,
I think I've asked a question before, but set it on private. However, my question from before has been self-answered. Now I have two other ones.
First of all, I'd like to know any female duets that fit a mezzo and a mezzo-saprano. It'd be best if it's one of Stephen sondheim's songs. We're quite alright with wide ranges. A little background info. I got Cinderella and my friend got Baker's Wife for our school production of into the woods. She's the better actor and I'm the better singer.
Second of all, I'd like to know what, in your opinion does a true saprano sound like. If you have any video examples that would be very helpful. My voice has quite a range, so I'd like to know what category I fit in best. The lowest song I've ever been able to sing is "someone else's story" from chess (I think). The highest, Green Finch and Linnet bird.
Thank you for your criticism
Answer
Hello, Yalin –
Thank you for the question.
Check out the duet between "Gabby" and "Oolie" in Cy Coleman's CITY OF ANGELS – "What you don't know about women".
You can find it in an outstanding anthology for the Broadway mezzo:
http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/The-Singer-s-Musical-Theatre-Anthology-Volum
My sopranos know they can demonstrate a series of scales between B3 and D6 without evidencing any breaks. Some go lower and higher. There are all kinds of sopranos for all occasions. Picking one or two out to set the example in a field of music that may not be of any interest to you is a waste of time. Everyone has their personal favorites.
If your interest is in Broadway sopranos, then check out this anthology devoted to them:
Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology, Soprano – Vol. 3
http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/store/smp_detail.html?cart=32001285122&lc=recs:det
For each of the separate songs from the individual shows, there is a soprano featured on an Original Cast recording. Listen to it. Then do the same for all the sopranos singing all the other material contained in the other four anthologies for Soprano. By then, you should have heard plenty of material you'd like to learn.
My job as a professional vocal coach is to teach you how to train your soprano range so you can sing the material you want or have been hired to sing. We both will know when your vocal chops and audition material can measure up to or beat out a line of trained sopranos standing beside you – all eligible and appropriate for the role you hope to get.
