Acting in Plays, Singing/Once Upon a Mattress Audition
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 11/21/2011
QuestionDear Sean,
I am a High School Student in preparation for an upcoming audition for the spring musical, Once Upon a Mattress. I am specifically auditioning for the role of Queen Aggravain. I want to show that I am diverse in my abilities, but still highlight characteristics that showcase the needs to play the Queen. I can sing any style, and my range is not a problem.
I also am very interested in your Belters Method. As I stated before, I can sing any style, but my belting is definitely one of my weaker points. I would love to be able to strengthen my voice in any way possible.
Thanks so much!
-Charlotte
Answer
Hi, Charlotte –
Thank you for the question.
The role of Queen Aggravain in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS ranges from Low A to 3rd-line B. A good portion of it sits low in the register.
Consider "Little Girls" from ANNIE. It reflects the same range and goes to 3rd-space C. So does "Happy To Keep His Dinner Warm" from HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS, etc.
Whatever you choose, present your material with the same energy as you would "Sensitivity". In other words, the Queen has an agenda. What is it? She faces the audience and lets them in on it.
Thank you for your interest in my teaching method. I am re-formatting the material and will have it available soon.
