Acting in Plays, Singing/vocals
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 2/10/2011
QuestionWhen i sing my throat begins to hurt & its not the air i put in my diaphragm because im filling it up to capacity so what is the problem ?
AnswerHi, Brandi –
Thank you for the question.
The answer is simple. You are exerting too much pressure in the back of your throat.
My job as a professional vocal coach is to show you how to place your voice throughout your range. It's all about channeling the air you take in to then producing stress-free tones. Whatever your vocal category, i.e., soprano, mezzo, etc., you should be able to demonstrate no less than a 2-octave scale, back and forth, without evidencing any breaks or stress.
That skill takes time to master. But it comes through dedication and a reliable vocal workout.
The ultimate goal of every singer is consistency. You have to be able to deliver the goods all the time – no matter what time of day or whatever the particular performing circumstance. That means staying healthy and in peak vocal condition. You must know how to warm-up your voice before working your material. Otherwise, you risk all kinds of vocal damage.
I am a vocal coach to working singers in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm also the Editor and Publisher of SanFranciscoSentinel.com All my articles and interviews provide a link to my personal e-mail.
