Acting in Plays, Singing/falsetto
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 7/14/2011
QuestionThis past school year was my senior year in high school. And for all my life I've had a great falsetto. But about half-way through the school year this year my falsetto just disappeared. At the beginning of the year my voice was fine and I had no problems. Now It's like i forgot how to sing in falsetto or something. My voice just refuses to go into falsetto no matter how much I try. It really saddened me and I miss back when I had free range (to an extent) in my voice. So my question is, is there anyway to get my falsetto back? I would really appreciate any help you could give me. Even if you just tell me that I'll never get it back. At least then I wouldn't have to wonder anymore.
AnswerHi, Michael –
Thank you for the question.
Not everybody means the same thing by the term "falsetto". What songs were you singing that just don't seem to work anymore?
The first question is: what is your normal range without your falsetto? Speaking in treble clef – where the vast majority of popular vocal sheet music is spelled – what are your lowest and highest notes?
Given your age and all the hormones that are raging through your body – you can't expect your voice to behave the same way it did this same time last year. Yes, those days are gone forever. Now it's time to train your voice as a man.
My job as a professional vocal coach is to determine your true vocal category, i.e., tenor, baritone, bass, etc. Some men have an enthusiastic interest in the countertenor range. What that generally means is an enthusiastic interest in the repertoire written for the Classical Countertenor. But not every guy has what it takes to do that. Sample David Daniels' recording, SERENADE:
http://www.amazon.com/David-Daniels-Christoph-Willibald-Gluck/dp/B00004SRG1
I have seen him several times in concert. He is a handsome, beefy guy. Classical singers perform without a mic. Mr. Daniels has a beautifully trained voice and one that can easily be heard in any standard concert hall or opera house.
If you're referring to the "Doo Wop" variety of falsetto, listen to such great groups as The Silhouettes, The Penguins, The Five Satins, etc. My favorite group of all time is the Ink Spots:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Ink-Spots/e/B000AQ0KF4/digital/ref=ntt_mp3_rdr?_encodi...
Over the years, they had two major Lead voices who employed the most amazing flexibility with their falsetto.
Do you want to aim for a professional career as a singer? Are you thinking of becoming a music major?
If you have a sample of your voice that I can listen to on-line I will be happy to offer you some feedback.
