Question
Hi. I like to go to a karaoke bar sometimes with friends. I love to sing but I've never been trained.

however I have an embarrassing crappy problem: I yawn uncontrollably at random parts of the songs.

Why do I do this and how can I stop?

Thanks for the question.

The best suggestion I can give you – whether you've had training or not – is to practice the songs you know you're going to pick from before you go to the Karaoke Bar. Work each song 100 times before singing any of them in public. Practice as though you were going to audition for "The Voice".

If you were a lead singer in a band or were doing a solo concert, then your every note and gesture would be completely mapped out. In other words, you would be able to perform that same material the same way for a second show that night or the next night or next week. That kind of rehearsal and preparation also includes how you take your breath in for every phrase throughout the song and how you channel that air to accommodate the challenges of the phrase, i.e., a held note, a climactic high note, etc. Your mind would be on the total product – as it has been rehearsed – from moment to moment. Nowhere in there did you plan a yawn. Or a sneeze.

Professional singers know they have to deliver the goods to the Producer of the show, the Owner of the club, to the Audience, and to those really-visible Critics out in the audience taking notes. That's what "learning HOW to sing" is all about.
