Acting in Plays, Singing/audition song
Expert: Sean Martinfield - 8/8/2011
QuestionHi Sean,
I am auditioning for Parade and hope to be either Mary or Iola. I need to chose a song that requires a mixed voice and I was thinking of doing I Know Things Now from Into the Woods. I heard that Sondheim was offered the job to compose for Parade but he turned it down so I think the song would work, the only problem being that I am unsure if it would be difficult for the accompanist to play. Would it be too difficult and what other song could I use if it is? It needs to be a contemporary broadway song not written by Jason Robert Brown. My comfortable range is the E bellow middle C to the F above tenor C (E3-F5) and I can sing G#4-B5 or some times C5 in either my head voice or chest voice.
Thanks,
Rebecca
AnswerHi, Rebecca –
Thank you for the question and all the surrounding information.
"I Know Things Now" is not a difficult song to play. Your job is to sing it really well.
Also consider "Not for the life of me" from THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE. The song is available in the Vocal Selections which you can access on-line at this URL:
www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/Thoroughly-Modern-Millie-Vocal-Selections/4985696?aff_id=65200
Listen to the Original Cast recording. It's easy to figure out what your audition panel might be expecting you to do. Whatever you choose to sing, present your material in the manner of the character you want to be considered for.
