Acting in Plays, Singing/Audition piece
I am auditioning for In to the Woods for my community theatre and I have the worst time picking out songs to sing. I want to audition for Jacks mom, and the Bakers Wife. I know they are different parts but still. So I am a low alto, I can belt to a high b flat/C. But In head voice I can go up to a D/E. I could really use your help! Any suggest would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, Emily –
Thank you for the question.
The difference between the roles of Jack's Mother and the Baker's Wife starts with their vocal categories. The Mother is older and is described as a soprano. Her sound belongs to a great character actress. The Baker's Wife is a standard mezzo-soprano with a good belt. She is a young woman and old enough to have had several kids by now. But where are they? Her overall range stretches between Low G to your High E. So, concentrate your efforts on The Baker's Wife.
Consider any of the following:
Could I Leave You – FOLLIES (Check the "Vocal Selections" which prints the song in E major. The URL below will take you to a site where you can transpose the key. Consider E-flat or D)
The worst pies in London – SWEENEY TODD
I'm Going Back – BELLS ARE RINGING (Transpose up to D major)
You Can Always Count On Me – CITY OF ANGELS
Why Can't You Behave? – KISS ME, KATE (Transpose up to D major or E-flat)
Make sure you can sing all the material of the Baker's Wife. Whatever you choose for your audition, pump her agenda and personality through your song. Also, go prepared to do a 16-measure excerpt.
