Acting in Plays, Singing/In the Heights Audition: Need Song Help!
My name is Melissa and I am a 21 year old drama major. I have an upcoming audition for a production of In the Heights so I am looking for a contemporary song either musical theatre, pop, or rock. I am a mezzo-soprano but I can hit low alto notes and I do like to show off my belt. I have sang songs such as "Breath" and "It Won't Be Long Now" from In the Heights, "On My Own" from Les Mis, "Easy to be Hard" from Hair, and "I Know Him So Well" from Chess, most recently I used the song "Total Eclipse of the Heart" for an audition. But I always have trouble finding pop/rock songs to show off my belt.
Hi, Melissa –
Thank you for the question.
Your job at this audition for IN THE HEIGHTS is to prove your vocal chops as a Pop/Rock artist. If this is the genre of Broadway musical where you believe you can be successful, then you need to be building your Pop/Rock audition portfolio. In other words, if a working Pop/Rock cover band were auditioning for a female lead singer, then count on competing against other Pop/Rock female lead-type singers – especially those who have no interest in Broadway musicals. What would you sing?
Consider these two hits by these two major artists:
Breakaway (Kelly Clarkson)
Hot N Cold (Katy Perry)
When you get to the site, notice that you can transpose the song into the key that will work best for your range. While you're there, explore the names of other top-selling female artists and their song titles.
