Acting in Plays, Singing/Vocals
I was listening to singers like Emmy Rossum, Sarah Brightman, Joan Sutherland, and was wondering what do I have to do to be able to sing in the soprano range... nicely? I can hit notes, just with bad pitch and tone quality, and its my dream to act/sing/dance in either a traveling show or movie. Please and thank you!
Hi, Anne –
Thank you for the question.
My job as a professional vocal coach is to identify your vocal category, i.e., soprano, mezzo-soprano, etc., and then train you accordingly. Your vocal category is a natural thing. If it turns out you are a soprano, then the standard range of a standard soprano stretches over the two octaves between C4—C6. All my sopranos sing above and below this range.
If what you really want are the full-fledged skills of a Classical Soprano, then the very best advice I can give you is to earn your Bachelor's Degree as a vocal major in the best conservatory or university you can afford. Because that is what your future competition is doing right now.
While you're thinking about all this, listen to more sopranos — including Beverly Sills, Edita Gruberova, Leontyne Price, Natalie Dessay, Mirella Freni, and Kathleen Battle. That's what libraries and inter-library loans are for.
Check out my recent interview with soprano Marnie Breckenridge. She earned her Masters Degree here in San Francisco at the Conservatory of Music.
