Acting in Plays, Singing/Audition song for Fiddler on the Roof
Hello. I am a 16 year old girl and this year my school is putting on a production of Fiddler on the Roof. I desire the role of Yenta, the nosy, old matchmaker. I have a VERY extensive range, I can go from a A 2 to an A 5,and I'm a dramatic soprano. Therefore, when it comes to musical theatre, I like to sing low alto/belt for auditions because when I sing soprano it sounds far too operatic and classical for musical theatre. My voice doesn't really stand out when it comes to Musical theatre nor am I a skilled dancer (especially since I fracture my femur), so those points emphasize my desire for Yenta since I am a very skilled actress. I struggle with finding a piece that really fits Yenta's big character along with maintaining the low alto/belt voice that fits with her solos.
Do you have any suggestions? please & thank you
Hi, Madison --
Thank you for the question.
Sounds like you really want to be in this show. The role of Yenta requires a good character actress. The character voice she needs -- along with all the accent stuff -- is that of an aggressive, well-intentioned, interfering but loved older woman.
Consider “So What?” from CABARET. It is sung by the Landlady, Frau Schneider. The song sits low and offers plenty of opportunity to display this register of your voice, along with your sense of comedy and drama. It is contained in the following anthology on the web site below. The volume includes many other songs you may want to use for future auditions.
