Question
Hello. My name is tara. I'm 16 and on the heavier side of the spectrum. I
throughly enjoy singing and am a member of 2 school choirs. My academic
director has me placed as an alto which i have been singing since i was 10,
but i have a hard time using my head voice in alto range. My select director
has me placed as a moving second soprano or alto 1. I was wondering if you
had any advice on how to maximise my voice. My range is a above the staff to
the a below. My theoritical knowladge is limited, but I love music. Thanks for
your help.

Answer
Hi Tara...Thanks for writing.

It sounds like you do love music.  That is awesome.  Music is such a great part of the human expression.  It speaks to the masses.  It touches hearts like no other medium.  I could go on and on as I love music too.  :)

So on to your question...
When you say maximizing your voice, it sounds like you are speaking about power.  A good powerful voice comes from an excellent breath support.  Are you singing using your diaphragm for breathing or your chest?
