Expert: John T. Aney - 7/4/2004
QuestionHello John,
My name is Amanda Edlow, and I am an upcoming sophmore in High school, and I have all of a sudden been interested in acting ever since I have seen school plays and also traveled to New York to see AIDA featuring Deborah Cox. I am a good singer and have performed in school for solos and also in church, but acting wise, I have no experience with even though I am known for having a cool personality. I would like to start out in plays or musicals. In conclusion, how can become a drama person when I am not in Drama or Theatre classes at school , but really want to pursue in this? ~Amanda Edlow
AnswerAmanda,
I'm glad to hear that you are interested in theatre. It's really a wonderful art to be involved with!
You said you are in high school. So, the best place for you to start exploring acting and drama is to see if your high school has a drama teacher. He or she would be happy to talk with you. If you don't know who the drama teacher is, ask an English teacher - they should know. You should also talk to your choir teacher about musicals that might be happening in your high school or your town.
I'm not sure what you mean by a "drama person." If you are asking how to get involved in theatre, well, check what I wrote in the last paragraph. If you want to know how to get involved, well, just do it! Get involved! Ask around - your friends, your teachers, your parents.
One piece of advice - don't let anyone tell you it's a waste of time. Theatre is a fantastic way to meet people, to learn valuable skills (like how to get along with lots of people), a safe, productive way to spend your evenings, and a fun thing to do! Even if you decide you don't want to act, there is always a need for good people who love theatre to help out in other ways - by working backstage, helping with costumes or makeup, etc.
Good luck to you!
