Acting in Plays, Singing/Musical Auditions

Question
I am 13 and am trying out for a school musical in two weeks. I need to pick a song to start practicing. I have never auditioned for anything, so I don't really know what to do. I also know I have a good voice but I have never taken lessons or even sung in public. What should I do?

Answer
Hi Emily...Thanks for writing.

Are you able to get to a library?  What I would do is find a library that has a music section that has CD and sheet music.  I would listen to a wack of pieces in the library and choose one.  Do you have time to practice, practice, practice?  Then I would listen to it and sing along with it on the CD at home until I knew it  off by heart.  Is there someone that you could ask to listen to you?  Then I would perform it for someone you trust and that has some experience and get them to tell you what they think.

Then go audition and learn from the experience.  No matter what, I'd continue to audition just to get better and better.

Does that help you?
