Acting in Plays, Singing/auditioning for Lend Me a Tenor--song piece?
Expert: Wanda Reinholdt - 11/12/2007
QuestionHello Wanda! I'm new to this site, but was just looking into a play i hope to audition for this month--and am at a loss as to what material to use. I haven't performed on stage (theater) in ages, but had some experience with it when i was in my 20's. I've been singing since i was 13, with vocal training in college. I sing more pop-music now (i sing with a band), but would love to tap back into my theater roots. This is my first attempt at it, and i'm nervous. My vocal range is considered mezzo-soprano. My current "style" is very pop/country driven: most comfortable singing Martina McBride and Evanescence style songs. Any suggestions on what i should audition with for this play? I'm not cast-specific as to whom i'm shooting to play. I just wanna make it INTO the play. :o) Thanks so much for any all advice...
AnswerHi Becky...Thanks for writing. A good question...Congrats on getting back in there, by the way! :)
Well, I am always hesitant to give particular song suggestions to anyone who I have not heard sing or have not seen. I know a little about your background and that helps but I am still guessing here.
So I think the best advice I can give you is to either take a song that you know (like a McBride or Evansecence) and perform it in a way that is musical. This might be the least stressful for you. And it might open you up to possibilities in your singing of that song with your band too.
OR
Find a song from Lend Me a Tenor and perform it.
OR
Go to the library and look into musicals like Annie or White Christmas and other musicals that have lower songs. Listen to them until you find a song you like and do that.
Does that help?
Let me know how it goes.
