I'm doing a University Assignment dealing with if video game violence can affect children and teens. What are your views on this matter? Do you believe that Video games can lead to violent and/or criminal behaviour in adolescents?
Thanks for your help.
Tom Howe
Answer Howdie Tom,
I can give you my personal opinion on this, but there's a great deal of information out on the web about this topic I'd recommend looking through.
Short answer: I do not believe video games lead to criminal behavior in adolescents.
Long answer: There's been a great deal of research done that proves, those who claim is does incite criminal behavior, already had a wavering toward that. Video games have now replaced the movies for what people can blame things on. Looking just at sales, several thousand people are playing violent games like Grand Theft Auto, every single year. How many of those people then go on to perform acts of violence? I don't know the exact number, but I would guarantee less than 100 (I know it's far less than that, but compared to thousands, 100 is still a small number).
I'm not going into more specifics as there's too much out there in regards to this subject. Just keep in mind as you search for things that some times when a person says there's a study for something, they may be quite wrong (not going to say anyone lies) - that includes anything I've said since I don't have specific links for things. Also, in case you didn't know, ludology is the study of video games, so searching for that may also turn up some good information for you.
