How to fix video problems, packet loss, settings, hints and tips for action games such as Quake 1, 2, and 3, Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Decent, Doom. Along with the numerous clones.

Experience
I'm an avid gamer who has had to deal with the problems first hand and would just like to help people not have to struggle alone like I did. If at all possible try to limit questions to Half-Life and its mods, Quake 1, 2, and 3

Question
I have an AT&T Broadband Cable connection at home.  I have been playing CS with no problem for about 3 months.  About a week ago I started to have Warning: connection problems.  Sometimes I recover, other times I time out.  I always have net_graph 3 running, and I noticed that my packet loss shot to 99%.  I have a D-Link 713P firewall/gateway/router/switch connected to my cable modem.  I unplugged everything else and still had the problem.  I have and ECS K7S5A motherboard with an integrated 10/100 Lan port on it.  I have upgraded the drivers on that, and the firmware on my D-link.  I opened up a trouble ticket with AT&T and they said there was nothing wrong and it must be my non standard router (they use Linksys).  Any thoughts?

Answer
The router you are running shouldn't be a problem at all... my best friend uses a D-Link 713P.  I have LinkSYS.  However, a couple reasons why the packet loss could sky rocket include, over usage of the service in your area.  Somebody could be downloading a very large file somewhere in your service area, thus degrading the service for everyone else.  Do you share your cable modem with your family?  I find that if you do someone in your family may have Kazaa or something enabled to do uploads.  Those kill CS connections everytime.  Check to see.  Make sure you aren't running anything extraneous in the background including, other Internet programs (Aim, Napster, etc), turn off ANY and all other software, (Winzip, Winamp, etc).  If it continues to happen take the computer in and have someone look at it... there might be a virus problem.  Other than that... you might check out the CS message boards at www.counter-strike.net.

Thanks for the question!
