Subject: Audition
Question This is my first audition. What should I wear and how can I calm my nerves?(it's a singing audition)
Answer Hi Zaria,
You don't say what the audition is for or what kind of company you are auditioning for, so it is a little difficult to advise you. In general, I'd say wear something neat, clean, comfortable and easy to move in (in case you are asked to dance or read a scene. Slacks are fine, or a skirt that is not too short to move in comfortably. Depending on what you are auditioning for you might want to suggest the character or style of the play, but no one expects you to come in costume. Don't wear all black or overly bright or loud clothes. Look good, but not garish.
As for calming your nerves, the best way to do that is to focus on your audition material, on the job you are there to do, and not on the "audience". They are all on your side - directors want nothing better than to love what you are doing - so don't worry about them. You can't judge your own performance so don't even try. Just be prepared and focus on your song - the music, the words, the character and what you are trying to communicate to the one you are singing to - the emotion and meaning of the words of the song (and that goes for anything you might be asked to read as well). If you are thinking about that, you won't have time to be nervous.
I wish you all the luck at the audition, Zaria. Most of all, have fun with it. Auditions are just another chance to have the fun of performing. Auditors are just another audience. Enjoy it.
Best,
Arlene (MsDirector)
