Topic: Acupuncture

Expert: Prof. Dr. B.K. Singh
Date: 1/29/2008
Subject: nasal polyp and arthritis in metatarsal joint in toe

Question
Dear Dr. Singh,
I have not done accupuncture, but am wondering whether it can help me.
I developed a nasal polyp following a sinis infection.  I took two courses of antibiotics and oral steroids and now use a daily nasal spray (Flonase).  Can Acupuncture cure a nasal polyp?
I am also wondering if Acupuncture can heal arthritis.  I have complete arthritis in my second tarsal metatarsal joint in my second toe and am unable to do many activities.  I wear a customized orthotic which helps.  An Orthopedic surgeon is recommending surgery to remove the arthritis and fuse the joint with a screw.  Can Acupuncture relieve the pain of arthritis and eliminate the need for surgery?  Should I try this prior to surgery?

I also now have neck pain and limited mobility following a tooth extraction.  For my neck, I am trying stretching and icing.  My foot, nasal polyp and neck pain are all on the left side of my body.

I take a multi-vitamin, an antidepressant(Zoloft), eat healthy, pray and meditate.  I am 48 years old, married with 4 children and need lots of energy and mobility to function.  Please advise about:
1) nasal polyp
2) tarsal metatarsal joint
3) limited range of mobility in my neck following tooth extraction
Thank you, Thank you so much for your time and consideration of me.  Bonnie

Answer
Polyp may shrink with acupuncture treatment but may not totally disappear except surgery.I don't know how bad is your arthritis as acupuncture does help in reducing pain and to some extend slow down the progression of the disease depending upon patient's response to the treatment which varies from person to person. But don't be disappointed as you may be helped by acupuncture for your neck problem as well as for your depression. Get in touch with a experienced acupuncturist in your area for a complete evaluation of your case based on your pulse diagnosis.
