Question Hello. I recently began treatment with an acupuncturist, initially for allergies and tinitus. After a two hour consultation the acupuncturist recommended my liver and heart were weak and that I should detox which includes coming off my thyroid and anti-depressant medication. I have been taking anti-depressants for about 10 years now. My family has a history of depression and my bouts have been severe over the years, but much, much better since I have been on medication. I am currently going through a rough patch, having had two family losses and also have just moved. The acupuncturist has asked for my trust and wants me to discontinue my meds. I am a bit worried about the timing and have some fear of being off medication since it has been helpful. Can you give me your opinion on this situation? Thank you so much.
Answer Hi Sharlene, In most states it is against the law for your acupuncturist to go against your PCP and tell you that you should discontinue your western medications. I would talk to your acupuncturist about how you feel. I personally would never tell a patient that they should stop any western medications. Sometimes I will suggest that they speak to their PCP about weening off certain medications especially if there symptoms start to go away with acupuncture and herbs ex: high blood pressure, cholesterol, hot flashes etc...
I have had wonderful results with patients who are suffering from depression/ anxiety but I don't believe you should just stop taking your western meds, if anything speak to your MD and ween off them.
