Question
I have a 14 year old son who was diagnosed with asthma at 2.  About four years ago I had him allergy tested and he came up pretty well negative.  He has been using his inhaler more frequently than ever lately and so we took him to the allergist today who tested him and found he is very allergic to cats.  We have two wonderful family pets who happen to be cats.  My son is just devastated.  Doc says to get rid of them.  What do you know about alternative therapies and pet allergies?  thanks very much.

Answer
Asthma is an infant tells me that the child is a bit constitutionally weak. There are basically 2 types of asthma, short inhale long exhale and long inhale, short exhale.

I am guessing that he has short inhale, long exhale. This is indicative of a weakness in the Kidney channel, and implicates the spleen as well.

Allergies are most often a case of spleen qi or spleen energy deficiency. The basic way it functions is like this.

The autoimmune function is governed by the lungs.
When the lungs are weak, allergies crop up.
The lung is dependent upon the spleen qi for it's energy.
In essence, if the spleen qi is deficient, the lung qi is deficient, this is recognized as the root of allergies according to my training.

SO, all that being said, typically what I do is tonify the spleen and lungs with acupuncture and herbs. This along with tonification of the kidneys can cure the asthma as well. You may want to find a home for the cats, or seclude them while the treatment is going on to give him some relief while he builds the spleen, kidney and lung qi.

There is also a technique called N.A.E.T. which stands for Natural Allergy Elimination Technique that is sometimes practiced by acupuncturists. I had a collegue that took the training and saw great results, but what I have told you is pretty much the extent of my knowledge on NAET. I'm sure they have a website where you could look for local practitioners in a database.

It is entirely possible to take care of this allergy and asthma with Traditional Chinese Medicine.

All the Best,

R. Scott Malone L.Ac.
