Acupuncture - acupuncture, neuropathy, lower back pain

Expert: Dr. Brendon J. O`Brien, D.C. - 9/11/2008

Question
Dr. O'Brien,

My mom has lower back pain from lumbar stenosis and scoliosis. She also is a diet controlled diabetic that experiences neuropathy in her feet and legs. She has hypertension that she takes medicaton for.  She went to an acupunturist a few days ago for her lower back pain.  Her pain seemed to move sides and her neuropathy got worse and continued up to her body.  She also is experiencing light headedness and her balance is off since her first treatment.  She is apprehensive about going to her second acupuncture treatment. Is this usual? Will it continue to worsen? Will it worsen before it gets better? Thanks so much!

Margie

Answer
Hello Margie,

That may have just been a coincidence.  Often with chronic conditions it may take several treatments/months to notice a major improvement (which doesn't mean it can't happen with a few treatments), as a general rule of thumb.  She may want to continue with a few weeks of treatment to determine if she has improved or not.

Have a great day,
Dr. Brendon O'Brien D.C.
