Acupuncture - Swelling in Leg

Expert: Heather Vandeburg - 7/27/2009

Question
On my 2nd attempt to fuse my ankle I had to wear an external fixation device. When it was removed I had continued swelling in my ankle and up through the leg to the knee. I was advised that it would take a year to go away. It's been over a year and I still have the swelling, which to me has not even improved over the year. Would acupuncture relieve any of this swelling and/or the pain and burning sensation I get in my ankle?

Answer
Hi Ellen,
Acupuncture would be worth a try.  It will increase lymph and blood flow in the area of trauma.  I am sure that your procedure reduced the circulation to your ankle. Some times your body just needs a jump start to get your immune system back into that ankle to increase circulation and finish the healing process.   I hope this helps.  There are also some great Chinese Herbal liniments and compresses that you could do as well.

Take care,
Heather Vandeburg LAc MSOM diplAc
