Acupuncture/phlegm-heat

Question
I have just had acupuncture for a digestive disorder. Basically,
stagnant digestion and some possible blockage to the right of
my belly button. Acupuncturist came up with "heat-phlegm" but
was not too specific about nutritional remedy. (I already had
blood test and ultrasound, both were negative. There is no pain,
just discomfort there. And some weakness of energy. Are there
any specific nutritional and/or herb recommendations for "heat-phlegm"
conditions? And what to avoid? Thanks! I am 59 and generally
excellent health otherwise.

Answer
Depending on which state you're in, an acupuncturist may or may not have training in herbal remedies (it depends on the state's regulations for practicing oriental medicine).  If your acupuncturist does have herbal training they should be able to create an individualized formula perfect for your phlegm heat condition.  However, if they do no have herbal training, ask them to refer you to an herbalist that can give you a formula.  Even though you have a diagnosis of phlegm heat, there are many signs and symptoms that can fall under the umbrella of that diagnosis that would modify the herbal formula specifically for you.  Thus, I can't give you a recommendation for specific herbs.  I can say that generally people with phlegm heat conditions should avoid greasy and fried foods, dairy products and anything that you may be sensitive too like wheat for example.  Alcohol can also be problematic for phlegm heat conditions.  Also, try taking digestive enzymes before each meal (found at any reputable health food store).  They can work wonders for sluggish digestion.  I would definitely recommend getting a customized herbal formula from the herbalist, it should help you out a lot.
