I believe my daughter (7 years old) and myself have come down with possible flu. We had sore throat, a lot of congestion and now a cough has started. I feel that it is moving to our chests. Although we have not had fevers. Anyway, I was wondering if "Golden Flower Chinese Herbs" Andrographis formula would be safe for my 7 year old to take because I understand this is a strong antibiotic? I have some on hand and thought we might ought to start it. In case you are not familiar with this, the bottle states the following:
Extra Concentrate Andographis Formula (Chuan Xin Lian Kang Yan Pian)
Proprietary Extract Blend: 600 mg 7.5 to 1 extract blend of: Ingredient (600 mg. extrait des herbes par comprime)
Andrographis Herb, Isatidis Root, Taraxaci Herb
Chuan Xin Lian, Ban Lan Gen, Pu Gong Ying
Thanking you in advance for your help.
Answer Hey Lisa,
I am not familiar with this particular formula, but the herbs that you mentioned are heat clearing herbs.
IF the flu is hot type, with feeling hot, sweating, sore throat, yellow mucus and yellow tongue coating, you could use this, although personally it dosen't seem like a very well rounded formula. I would go with yin qiao san with some additions or straight yin qiao off the shelf instead.
If you have cold signs, no sweating, white copious phlegm and white tongue, then I would absolutely NOT use the formula as it could make things worse.
Sore throat is usually an indication of heat type, I would go get some yin qiao asap.
If you use this for your child I would reduce the doseage to a third or quarter doseage.
Again, not having used this in my practice, I'm not clear on how strong or weak this formula is.
I would recommend Yin Qiao San for heat type, that has a proven track record.
