Acupuncture/Treatments for thinning hair

Question
Hello.

A good friend of mine has told me that acupuncture can regrow thinning hair. Is this true? If so, how? How do I go about finding a certified acupuncturist? What qualifications must I look for?

Best regards,

Julian

Answer
Dear Julian,

I have not seen acupuncture to be beneficial for thinning hair.  However, if the hair is thinning pathologically due to some kind of toxicity or hormone imbalance you would want to work with a medical doctor to make sure the underlying condition is correctly diagnosed and treated with the necessary medication.  Acupuncture and herbs in addition to that treatment would be useful to aid in treatment, and the treatment should lead to hair restoration as the underlying condition is corrected.

As far as qualifications, you want to find an Acupuncturist that attended an accredited institution that includes at least 3000 hours of training, and is licensed or certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) or by your state board.

Best of luck to you!
