Question
QUESTION: Can acupuncture relive chronic leg pain due to nerve damage from multiple TIA's?

ANSWER: Hi Joel,
Yes, Acupuncture can help relieve chronic leg pain due to nerve damage from TIA's.  I had a patient that had chronic leg pain and numbness from surgical nerve damage that was able to eleviate his pain and numbness. I have seen patients recover their motor ability and relieve pain post stroke. The thing about acupuncture is that it doesn't work the same for everyone.  But it would really be worth the try.  The amount of treatment you will need will depend on the length of time the condition has been occuring. It will also depend on the overall health of the patient.  If this is a really old condition and the patient is in overall poor health.  It may take 6 months to a year of weekly acupuncture to make a big change.

I hope this helps,

QUESTION: Thank you for your prompt reply. How do I go about finding a reputable Dr., and whether insurance or medicare will cover any of the cost.

Answer
I always tell people to go to NCCAOM.org our board certifying commission.  If people pass the board exam, I assume they are proficient.  There is a bill in congress right now trying to get acupuncture included in medicare.  You should write or call your congress person.  HR646.  Call your insurance company and see if they cover acupuncture.  If you have medicare as a primary,  they probably won't, because medicare doesn't.

Take care,
