Acupuncture/Supra-spinatus tendon - full thickness tear

Question
Dear Heather, after a couple of weeks treating my right shoulder for tendinitis, I tripped, fell onto the right arm, and as the pain increased, my chiropractor sent me for an ultrasound scan.  The scan came back as follows"full thickness tear of the insertion of the supra spinatus onto the greater tubersotiy of the humerus"; (defect measuring approx. 7mm in length, compatible with a u-shaped tear".  My chiropractor has been treating me with something similar to infra red and ultrasound, and as from this week I am also having acupuncture.  How likely is complete healing from acupuncture and other chiropractic procedures?  I'm not at all keen to have an operation.  Thanks, BP

Answer
Hi Beba,
Acupuncture can help to heal a tear as long as it is not a complete tear. Yours is big. It takes a long time to heal in the best of situations. Immobilization of the joint is important. . External herbal compresses, internal herbs. Acupuncture 3 times a week for 4-6 weeks. No reinjury.  Ultrasound and infrared is good.  Point location is critical. This is an issue I have with chiro-acupuncture. They have limited training and they don't get a lot of point  location education.   Good luck.  I would say try the intensive acupuncture first before you go to surgery. It is a very painful surgery.
