Acupuncture/Alternative treatment for peripheral neuropathy
Expert: Dr. Brendon J. O`Brien, D.C. - 10/3/2006
QuestionI've been diagnosed with disc problems in C5-C7 and from L1-S1. I also have radiculopathies in three of those lumbar spaces. I have burning, needling sensation on the bottom of both feet with a deep ankle ache, especially at night, and a constant pressure (squeezing) sensation in my fingers as well as in spots along my arms. None of this seems to follow a classic path. I've had nine orthopedic surgeries for knee problems, and I don't want any more surgery, if it can be avoided. I've also spent too much time with narcotic pain relievers, and I wish to have all that behind me. What combination of chiropractic, acupuncture and/or other disciplines might give me some relief? How do I find a good acupuncturist?
AnswerHello Jeremy,
You may want to see a Neurologist to determine the cause of the radiculopathies. You may also want to see a Doctor of Chiropractic as they specialize in the spine and all joints of the body. Once you obtain both diagnosis, you can see if they match, then a proper treatment plan can be established. Cervical discs can cause neurological symptoms in the lower extremities and upper extremities, due to any impingement on the cord at a higher level may affect any level below. Only through a exam would they be able to properly diagnosis the area of impingement. A MRI may be needed if you have not had one already.
Surgeries can cause nerve damage or scar tissue that can impinge the nerves causing Neuralgia.
Hope all goes well,
