Question
I'm very interested in starting formal study of holistic medicine. I also have interest and experience with organic agriculture as well as wildcrafting, so traditonal herbalism is particularly attractive. Chinese medicine also appeals very strongs to me.

I'm living in Michigan but my roots are in Indiana. It seems like almost all educational opportunities in holistic medicine are on the coasts. I'm suspicious of correspondence courses. Do you know of any schools/programs in Indiana? Any schools elsewhere in the midwest to recommend?

In your experience, how burdensome is the financial costs of the education? I'm trying to trust that in following my calling, these things will be provided, but its hard!

Answer
Hi Josh,
I had a few people in my class from Indiana.  I went to Midwest College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago.  They may be one of the closest to Indiana.  Most of the students commuted to class.  MCOM is a good school.  Pacific College of Oriental Medicine is also in Chicago and is also a good school. The student loan is a large one. I have been able to manage my payments ok.  My interest rate is a very low one.  I think that interest rates have gone up a lot since I was in school.  I was in your situation.  I finally gave in to the calling to practice TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine).  I am very happy doing what I do!  It is long hours.  Good luck!

Warm Regards,
Heather Vandeburg LAc MSOM
