Acupuncture/Too little/much treatment
Expert: Dr. Brendon J. O`Brien, D.C. - 2/24/2007
QuestionDear Dr. O'Brien,
I recently saw an acupuncturist for a combination of symptoms: bloating/gas, "phantom" pains, tired eyes and "burning" ears. I have a history of anxiety and stomach/liver problems, but my last labs were normal and I live healthier now.
He prescribed 12 sessions of acupuncture and acupressure, Jiawei Xiaoyao Wan, Gui Pi Wan, Shun Qi and Bu Pi Yi Chang.
It seems like a lot to me. My previous acupuncturist preferred to not give me too many herbs, if any, and didn't seem to think I needed so many sessions either.
I feel like a cash cow for this Herbmedic practice. ;-( Does everything prescribed seem essential? -- I assume I would "survive" without any treatment at all, but I wanted to help my body get more balanced and alleviate some of my symptoms. How much is enough?
Lastly, should the practitioner get your entire medical history? Check your tongue and pulse each visit? This one didn't. ??
Thank you for your thoughts.
AnswerHello Mel,
Eastern medicine considers the herbal formulations to be the most important aspect of healing, then acupuncture, then trigger pt, then meditation etc. So the herbal formulas will help, 12 sessions seems reasonable, it takes time for the body to balance out. Usually the first visit will consist of the exam...pulse,tongue, etc, this will be considered for your diagnosis. There should be a re-exam at the end of the 12 visits, or half way through to determine your progress. Also, you should be feeling better with the treatment, if not find someone else!!!
Have a great day,
