Expert: Daniel Date: 4/1/2008 Subject: speedometer malfunctioning
Question I have an accura legend, manufacture date 2/94, my speedometer bounces and sometimes drops to (0) and stays there. I can not get a straight answer from our local shop, they seem to want to just throw parts at it until it is fixed. Do I have a speed sensor on the trans bad or a gauge problem? How/what do I start checking to find the problem. Thanks in advance for the help.
Answer Hi Rod,
This is a tough question as it could be a few things, the first thing I would try doing is measuring the voltage on the speed sensor connector. Connect the number one connector to ground using a volt meter and check to see if you have about 5V. With ignition switch ON (ll): 0 V or about 5 V With engine at idle in the E position: About 2.5 V. Try that and see what results you get, also are you getting a check engine light? There are a few other things that can effect speed sensors like tire pressure and so on. Hope this helps.
