Question
Hi. I once dated a violent alcoholic til 3 years ago. I met a man 3 months ago who had killed a 22 year old as he was driving drunk. He expects to go to jail for 2 years. He also has a baby on the way from a 1 night stand while drunk. Today he drank for the first time in 5 mths since the crash. He cried over the crash and jail. I feel like he is using me til he goes to jail. Are all alcoholics the same? I was sick over the drinking and feel like I should end this relationship. Advice??

Answer
Hi Kelly,

Yes Kelly, you are right to leave this man. Think about it. He has to serve time for killing a 22 year old. He has to go to jail for 2 years (and most probably serve less) His lawyer will probably get him into rehab if this was a 1st offense. Basically he has an opportunity to change his life for the better, the family of that 22yr old will never be the same.

-And he's still drinking. This man has a serious problem. This man plays the victim, a common pattern of an alcoholic/addict. Don't feel sorry for him. Get out before you get too involved.

All the best,

Bev

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
