Addiction to Alcohol/marriage

Question
My husband(11 months sober) and I got married about 4 months ago.  We are already having problems.  All we do lately is argue.  He argues with me about what ever I say and never really listens to me.  He is very selfish which makes my life very hard because I also have an autistic child.  Do you have any suggestions to make my life any easier and to make our marriage work?

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

It sounds like you have your hands full. In AA language, your husband may be 'clean but not sober'. He's not drinking, but he's impatient. Drink was the way of relieving pressure(arguments also relieve pressure - not appropriate though).

See if  your husband is open to going to AA meetings. He should talk about his arguments with a sponsor. Al Anon meetings may be helpful for you as well, and you both may be helped by counseling. Counseling should teach both of you to communicate more effectively so that your marriage will be more rewarding.

All the best

Expertise

I can answer questions on all addictive behaviors: alcohol, drugs, food, compulsive sex, codependency, gambling, compulsive shoplifting etc.

Experience

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
