Addiction to Alcohol/My mom needs help!!!

Question
Hi. I am sixteen years old. My mom has, for the past two years, been trying to deal with an alcoholic boyfriend. He has a serious problem. He will drink 6 or more beers several nights a week, and he knows that my mom doesn't like him drinking. She has come to me begging for help and I can't stand to see her hurt any more. How can she let him go? He keeps coming back! They get into arguments over insignificant details and I know she's tired of it. Please help me support my mom. I don't know what to do!

Answer
Hi Brittany,

It sounds like your mom is codependent. She knows she shouldn't be in this relationship, but it's really hard for her to get out and move on.

There are pages some on my site that can give her the insight to know what's going on. Check out:

Your Mom should also demand that he goes to AA or addiction counseling to get help. She should stand firm. No one should be in an abusive relationship.

Thank you for writing All Experts,
Hope this is helpful.

Wishing both of you good luck

Expertise

I can answer questions on all addictive behaviors: alcohol, drugs, food, compulsive sex, codependency, gambling, compulsive shoplifting etc.

Experience

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
