Question
after 15 months of sobriety, i recently had a slip, the day before valentines
day i was honest with my girlfriend, telling her the morning after i had gone
out. i went right back on the wagon that same morning. now she won't speak
to me. i called her once, but she would not answer. its been 6 days of no
communication. she told me not to try to contact her until she is ready to
speak to me. she has never been to an al-anon meeting. i am really starting
to think this is the end of the relationship. i love her more than anyone, and
cant stand the thought of losing her. she has been with me before i quit
drinking and has been by my side as a huge support through my
rehabilitation process. I'm afraid this slip is unforgivable. help!

Answer
Dear andy,

I can understand how you feel. But your girlfriend has to understand that you are an alcoholic and that this is a disease in the literal sense of the word.

Although AA is a good fellowship where alcoholics can support one another, I do not believe it is the right treatment.

Alcoholics have a physical illness, that needs to be treated.

I hope you can iron it out with your GF.  Your main task is to get better.
