Subject: is husband alchoholic

Question
hi, my husband has 1 or 2 drinks and his whole personality changes. He seems to have lots of energy after he drinks and becomes either real chatty or real obnoxious, gets bored and often goes driving. He says he can drive because he has only had 2 drinks, but the change in him is very noticeable. He thinks that you have to drink a lot more than that to be an alchoholic. Thanks for your opinion. Julie

Answer
Hi julie,

One of the signs of alcoholism is a remarkable change in personality after only a few drinks. This is due to the fact that alcoholics have problems producing biological energy from non-alcoholic substances, such as normal carbohydrates from food. The metabolism of alcohol bypasses about ten biochemical steps in glycolysis, hence alcohol provides immediate biological energy to the brain that causes a sudden sense of well-being and a change in personality.

This has been explained in:

Why Alcoholics Drink? at
http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/articles/WAD.html

Alcoholism (Addiction) is a Treatable Disease at:

If he wants to experience well-being without the use of alcohol, he can do so by adopting the hypoglycemic diet, supplemented with various vitamins and minerals.
