Addiction to Alcohol/Alcoholism?

Question
I am 60 years old, divorced and living alone for the past 11 years, I have no work or social life, my friends are few.
I think it would be fair to say that I have always been a drinker and I have been able to drink quite a lot, maybe up to 2 bottles of wine, sometimes 2-3 times per week.
More recently I have switched to vodka, and I can down almost a whole bottle in one evening, the next day I pay the price in terms of hangover, I just feel dreadful for the entire day and sometimes well into the following evening.
I can't see how I might ameliorate my loneliness without my weekly binges, the alcohol takes away the emptiness and gives me a "glow" which I enjoy.
I am able to go several days between binges without needing to drink, or even thinking about a drink, then suddenly, it starts again.
I would value your opinion.

Answer
Hi Gina,

I think you realize that you're drinking much too much. And when you're lonely, the drink fills the gap. This test will help you define your problem. Http://www.untwist-your-thinking.com/alcohol-addiction.html

Check out the AA meetings in your area. These members are people who can relate to chronic drinking, but even more than that, the members become friends. Because you're alone, you need more people in your life. The membership gives you the opportunity to get out and meet people. Drink also diminished your self esteem and motivation, so force yourself to do join them.

The members will be welcoming and everyone has shared your experience, so don't be shy. You have to reinvent a positive new life.

Hope this is helpful. Thank you for writing all experts

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
