Addiction to Alcohol/binge drinking

Question
how do i cope and prevent my spouse from binge drinking

Answer
Hi Charlie,

Unfortunately no one can prevent anyone from drinking. An alcoholic will always find a way.

Binge drinkers often don't believe that they have a problem with alcohol because they don't drink every day. They think that they're under control - but they're not.

Here's a simple self test for your wife:

This can be a start to break her denial. Then she must do something: go to AA, speak to an addiction counselor, get recovery coaching, maybe rehab, etc. I've had success with many clients with recovery coaching by phone or on Skype. But the help she gets is up to her.  Whatever the choice, she can't do it alone.

Al Anon is a good support program to help family members deal with drinking problems. Find out if they have meetings in your area. If they do, drop in. All the members can relate to your problem and you won't feel so alone.

Hope this information is helpful,

Expertise

I can answer questions on all addictive behaviors: alcohol, drugs, food, compulsive sex, codependency, gambling, compulsive shoplifting etc.

Experience

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
