Answer
Hi Katie:

I think you realize that your fiancee is an alcoholic, and his drinking has caused problems in his life.

It's obvious that he wants to stop drinking due to the event of the baby, but he can't do it alone.

Because of the baby, demand that he goes to AA meetings regularly as well as get a sponsor - someone he can call when he gets cravings.  Tell him that he must go - and that you don't want to bring up this child alone, or with an alcoholic.

Here are other treatment options:

You have to be strong in your demands, but it won't be easy.

Good luck!!

Hope this information is helpful.

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I've worked in rehabs and detox centers, prisons and half-way houses and have a busy private practice as well as an active website where I can be reached for recovery coaching and consultation. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution. In the recovery field, you witness miracles. That's why I love what I do.
