Addiction to Alcohol/Recovering Alcoholic

Question
My fiancè has been an alcoholic for 5 years of the 10 we have been together. We have a 2 month old baby girl together.I have begged him for years to stop drinking (thinking I could change him, not knowing this is an illness and he can only help himself). Five days ago I decided to leave and he hit rock bottom. He decided to join Alanon. He has attended 2 meetings and is very positive about the program. He is now begging me to return, but I am scared as soon as I go home he will start drinking again (I have left before, only to return to empty promises) On the other hand I am scared if I stay away too long he will lose motivation to stay sober and start drinking again.  How long should I take to return home? And is there any material that can help me understand all the phases he will be going through, so that I can support him in his recovery?

Answer
HI Monique,

I know that AA is a popular program the he success rate for treating alcoholics is atrocious. I believe this is because they overlook the biological aspects of alcoholism, which is a disease in the literal sense of the word.  Your husband should be able e to treat himself if he understands the underlying biochemistry of alcoholism.
