Question
why does my boyfriend always get mad and mean when hes drinking

Answer
Hi Sharon,

I have no idea why your boyfriend in particular, always gets mad and mean when he's drinking, but alcohol releases inhibitions. Some people shut down, some cry, others get angry, or happy etc

One thing for sure, whether he's sober or drunk, no one should treat you badly. This page may help you.

It's also very easy to blame the drink for his behavior rather than take responsibility for it. When he's mean or angry at you, don't put up with it. Leave, and discuss this with him an another time. This behavior is verbal abuse.

Hope this information is helpful,

I have over 20 years experience working in the addiction field. My experience extends to all levels of substance abuse. I am a cognitive behavioral therapist, but 12-step programs are an excellent support. When working in the addiction field, there is no cookie-cutter solution.
